Skicoak was open for tours from 1965 to 1971, when the Waldorf family, who operated it, moved its artifacts to Roanoke Island, N.C., and opened an Indian village recreation site that operated there until 1978. The new outdoor attraction, the Skicoak Living Museum of the American Indian, even used the Frontier City teepees, until the operators abandoned Plains Indian culture to concentrate on the coastal Indian villages indigenous to this area. The Indian Village portion did reappear briefly in a separate venue opened on an 8-acre piece of property in the woods just across Virginia Beach Boulevard from the Pembroke Mall.
There were brief proposals to move the attraction to a 50-acre tract near Camp Pendleton and a 66-acre tract west of Rudee Inlet, but neither panned out. The paddlewheel steamer had already sunk, the train and most of its tracks had been sold to an outfit in Ohio, and the Frontier City itself had, fittingly, become a ghost town.
